Tutorial: Animal Skin Mask

Learn here how to create an animal skin mask texture with the help of the flagstone generator.

Step 1: Creating a new texture

Launch the New Texture Dialog by pressing thebutton (upper left corner) or selecting the File->New menu item.

Set the Width and Height values to 512x512.

Press the OK button, the background color doesn't matter here.

Step 2: Getting the basic flagstone pattern

Select the function Generator/Flagstone.

Press the Reset button at the Presets Panel to load the function's default settings.

Click with the left mouse button on the texture to generate the flagstone pattern.

Step 3: Rounding the edges

Select the function Filter/Smooth.

Load the Default settings at the Presets Panel. Set the Smooth Radius to 16.

Click on the texture with the left mouse button to smooth it.

Step 4: Removing the lower frequencies

Some of the stones are brighter than the others. This can be compensated with this step.

Select the function Filter/Homogenize.

Press the Reset button at the Presets Panel to load the function's default settings.

Click with the left mouse button on the texture. The texture will lose most of its contrast.

Step 5: Getting back the contrast

Select the Color/Maximize function.

Load the default settings at the Presets Panel.

Run the function on your flagstone texture. It's a bit noisy now, but this will be fixed in the next step.

Step 6: Smoothing again

Reselect the function Filter/Smooth.

Set the Smooth Radius to 8.

Smooth the texture by clicking on it.

Step 7: Black and white

Select the Color/Black and White function and load its default settings.

A Bias value of 50 is fine here. If you use a higher value, the resulting spots will be smaller.

Click on the texture to finish your animal skin mask.
